Roof Repair in Wakefield

Most roof problems start small: one slipped tile, a cracked ridge tile, a strip of flashing that has lifted in the wind. Left alone, water finds its way in, soaks the felt and timbers underneath and shows up weeks later as a stain on a bedroom ceiling.

Our roofers find where the water is really getting in, which is often not directly above the stain, and repair that rather than patching the nearest tile and hoping.

What a roof repair covers

  • Slipped, cracked and missing tiles and slates replaced
  • Roof leaks traced to their source and repaired
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles re-bedded or dry-fixed
  • Flashing renewed around chimneys, walls and roof windows
  • Valleys cleared, repaired or re-lined
  • Torn or sagging felt at the eaves replaced

When a repair is not the answer

If we get up there and find the tiles are sound but the felt beneath has perished across the slope, a patch will buy you a winter at best. We will show you photos of what we found and explain the options, including what a roof replacement would cost, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Service 2

Emergency Roof Repair

Storm damage and sudden leaks do not wait for a convenient time. If tiles have come off in high wind, a ridge has blown loose or water is coming through the ceiling, call us on 07949 221483. Tell us what you can see from the ground and we will tell you honestly how soon we can get to you.

The first job is always to make the roof safe and watertight, with a temporary cover if that is what the weather allows. Once it is dry and we can see the full extent of the damage, you get a quote for the permanent repair.

Our phone is answered Mon to Fri, 9am to 6pm. Outside those hours, send the form with a photo or leave a message, and we will reply when we are back.

While you wait for a roofer

  • Put buckets under drips and move furniture and electricals out of the way
  • If water is near a light fitting, switch that circuit off at the consumer unit
  • Take photos of the damage, inside and out, for your insurer
  • Keep people and cars away from the ground below loose tiles
  • Do not go up on the roof yourself, least of all in wind or rain

Service 3

Roof Replacement

Every roof reaches a point where repairs stop being good value. Tiles turn porous and start to crumble, the old felt underneath goes brittle, nails rust through and battens rot. When that is happening across the whole roof rather than in one corner, replacing it costs less in the long run than chasing leaks one at a time.

A roof replacement strips the old covering back to the rafters so the timbers can be checked properly. Because RPM also carries out structural repairs, a rotten rafter end or a sagging purlin found at this stage can be put right as part of the same job.

What goes into a new roof covering

  • Old tiles, battens and felt stripped and taken away
  • Roof timbers inspected, and repaired where needed
  • New breathable membrane and treated battens
  • New tiles or slates to suit the house and the street
  • Ridge and hip tiles dry-fixed with clips, not left to rely on mortar
  • New flashing where the roof meets chimneys and walls

New Roof Installation

A new roof on an extension, loft conversion, garage or outbuilding has to do more than keep the rain out. It has to tie into the house it joins, match what is already there and satisfy building control.

RPM builds extensions and loft conversions as well as roofing them, so our roofers are used to working from drawings and alongside the other trades on a job. We can take a roof installation from bare walls to the last ridge tile, or come in as the roofing contractor on someone else's build.

What a roof installation can include

  • Roof structure: rafters, joists and trusses
  • Membrane, battens and tiles or slates matched to the main house
  • Roof windows fitted and flashed in
  • Tiling around in-roof solar panels
  • Leadwork where the new roof meets an existing wall

FAQs

Questions about our roofing services

Can you match my existing roof tiles?

In most cases, yes. Common concrete and clay tiles and natural slates are still made or can be found reclaimed. Where a tile has been discontinued we will show you the closest match before we fit it, and on a small repair we can often move original tiles to the visible slope and use the new ones where they are hidden.

Will a roof repair need scaffolding?

Not always. Some small repairs near the eaves can be reached safely without it. Work higher up the slope, around a chimney or along a ridge usually needs a scaffold or tower, and a roof replacement always does. If your job needs scaffolding, we will say so up front and it will be in the quote.

Do you work as a roofing contractor for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. We work as a roofing contractor for landlords, letting agents and other builders as well as for homeowners. RPM also carries out general property maintenance, so a roof repair and the ceiling it damaged can be dealt with by one firm.

Will my home insurance cover storm damage to my roof?

Many buildings insurance policies cover sudden storm damage, but not gradual wear and tear, and every policy is different. Check yours or ring your insurer. If it helps, we can give you photos of the damage and a quote to send them.

Can you repair a roof in winter or in bad weather?

Roofing carries on all year. Heavy rain, high wind and ice stop some work for safety reasons, and mortar cannot be laid in frost, but a roof can still be made watertight with a temporary cover until the weather allows a permanent repair.
